The Dawn Prayer is an amazing book! One of the things I liked the most about it is that the author does a wonderful job of showing his love for the Syrian friends that he made, while they were going through the shared experience of captivity. He also gives full credit to the FSA jihadis who helped him get to Turkey after he escaped. I am so thankful that Matthew shared his story.
I, too, could not put it down; I finished at 3:00 AM. I saw his interview on FOX news and immediately bought the book. Honestly, I bought it to support him after I heard how the FBI treated him. 😡 After reading it, I wish it would be required reading for all Americans. It never enters the world of politics, it just states the facts. My take away is that we all need to come to together as AMERICANS! The terrorists never asked him if he is a Republican or Democrat; they tortured him because he was an American. In the end he is using this horrible experience to enlighten our amazing troops. BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT!!
This book will hold you spell bound. The appalling treatment by these terrorists is beyond human comprehension. The wisdom of this young man, resilience in every situation and his honor and respect for God, country and mankind is to be commended. I say shame on our FBI for failing Matthew and others that find themselves in similar situations.
The Dawn Prayer, by first time author Matthew Schrier is a must read for all Americans who feel and holds dear the freedom that our United States has to offer. Matt shares his personal accounts of being kidnapped and held prisoner by the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda when he visited Syria as a freelance photographer. It is through the grace of God and Matt's bravery that he was able to escape a probable and certain death at the hands of the enemy. Although free and home in the USA, Matt is still seeking justice. Matt Schrier, a soldier without the uniform is a hero for all time.
Chilling recollection of the author's time in captivity, with a little humor thrown in. Really confirms why we must make sure people coming into our country affirm our values and love of the American way of life. Very well written!

One of the best books that I have EVER read. I could relate to his sense of humor, and I was totally amazed with his attitude and his will to survive, all the while in captivity. I couldn't put the book down and I had such a vivid picture in my head through out his book, do to his astonishing descriptions of the world that was around him. My heart was racing as he described his escape which then in turn, kept me turning the pages until the very end. It angers me to hear how the FBI handled this whole situation and my hopes that there will be a second book with more insight of the FBI nonperformance along with where his friends, his captures and himself are today.
I read this book in just two sittings. I struggled to put it down. The story is gritty, real, and deeply confessional. There are times the author is the hero, the victim, the villan, and his own antagonist.This story is so heartbreaking because it actually happened. For anyone who wants to understand what happens to a journalist captured by the worst of humanity, it is a must read.
